The first record of the breed’s name dates back to as early as the 13th century when describing a popular entertainment, bull baiting. These dogs were used to attack bulls in arena combat in the medieval times up to the 19th century. This cruel sport was a very popular entertainment among noble men and royalty. The breed was fully created for special purposes and is thought to be the acme of canine breeding. At present the breed makes good guardians and watchdogs.
