In 1864 the first union of this breed’s fanciers was formed. It was formed by R.S. Rockstro who gathered in this union about 30 fanciers of the breed. Unfortunately, this union’s existence lasted only for three years. The BCA was founded in 1890 when the bull baiting has already been prohibited. The aim of the organization was to preserve the breed and alter its personality. Due to careful selection these dogs make gentle pets and family companions. In 1950 the BCA became a truly national organization. In 1896 an executive committee was created with the aim to conceive a new standard.

Many generations of breeders in the United States have sacrificed their time and energy to preserve and improve this uniquely lovable animal. Their goal is to continue this legacy by providing as much information and education as possible to promote the breed. Generally, the breed has always been popular in many countries; however, official recognition played a significant role in breed popularization around the world.
