This breed is classified as medium-sized, although the dogs weigh much. Their body is very massive, muscular and compact, with a very broad head and wide shoulders. The jaws of these dogs are extremely strong and tenacious, with an undershot bite. The loose skin forms many wrinkles over the head of these dogs; the jaws get their power from the thick prominent cheeks. To obtain the better grip a curving undershot jaw was designed; the rearward facing teeth prevent the loss of grip.

The origins of this breed are said to come from the Alaunts and Pugnaces of ancient England: the Mastiff and the Pug. Dogs of this breed were used in such sport as bull biting. Bull bating was so popular that even Queen Elizabeth used to attend such contests. Later the contests were banned and the breed's fanciers did their best to preserve the dog. As a result, they bred a great human companion. The breed’s standard was fixed and now only the American Kennel Club can change it. The original aggressiveness of the breed was eliminated by the breeders and as a result, dogs of this breed became friendly and loyal animals.
