English Bulldogs - Breeders - History

English Bulldogs are believed to have been developed in England about 1200. That was the time when the sport of bull baiting was spreading with the speed of light as a sort of entertainment. Even Queen Elizabeth used to attend such contests. Perhaps the breed's ancestor was an ancient mastiff-like breed of dog that was supposed to hunt the boar and restrain oxen using the same technique as the Bulldog of today.

The first record of English Bulldogs belongs to the doctor of Queen Elizabeth. He described the dog with a sturdy built and obstinate personality. Pieces of literature are also the evidence of the English Bulldogs' existence.

Later the contests were outlawed and the Bulldog's fanciers did their best to preserve the dog. They selected against ferocity and bred a great human companion. The Bulldog's standard was fixed and now only the American Kennel Club can change it. The Bulldog Club of America founded in 1890 also follows the standard and spares no pains to maintain the purity of English Bulldogs.

Breeders of English Bulldogs changed the dog's appearance extremely. As the result, the breed has a number of physical traits that are detrimental to the dog's health. Thus, English Bulldogs are prone to skin problems and often experience breathing difficulties. Nowadays, the efforts of breeders are aimed at improving the breed's health. It is recommended to use the healthiest bloodlines while breeding English Bulldogs.
